2007 Bridge Repair/Rebuilding Program
Twenty bridge repair/rebuilt projects across the entire WSOR system were completed during the year 2007. Work has varied from replacing pile cap bents to building entirely new bridge decks. The projects were distributed as follows: Markesan Subdivision: 1; Prairie Sudivision: 6; Monroe Subdivision: 8; Fox Lake Subdivision: 4; Reedsburg Subdivision: 1. Below is a summary of several of the key projects for the year 2007 to give an idea of the scope of our work. These repairs maintain and extend the useful life of the structures ten to twenty years before they will need to be entirely replaced.

Bridge 312 Project, MP 160.3, Reedsburg Subdivision — completed January 2007
Pr
oject consisted of replacement of pile cap bent 2 and replacement of tie deck spans 1, 2, 5, and 6. Work performed by WSOR Forces. This bridge carries traffic from such communites as Baraboo, Rock Springs, and Reedsburg, and also ballast rock trains for the Union Pacific Railroad that originate at Rock Springs. Total Cost: $10,235 (100% WSOR Funded).

Bridge A-534 Project, MP 97.7, Fox Lake Subdivision — completed February 2007
Project consisted of replacement of deteriorated stone in load bearing areas with pre-cast concrete, replacement of fractured cast iron bearing shoes at ends of span 1 and 2 and installation of cast-in-place concrete reinforcement jacket around the periphery of pier 1. Work performed by E-80 Plus Constructors, February 2007. This bridge carries all traffic that moves between Janesville terminal and Chicago plus local commericial traffic that is delivered to and from the Elkhorn and Fox Lake Subdivisions. Total Cost: $46,425 (100% WSOR Funded).

Bridge F-50 Project, MP 16.51, Monroe Subdivision — completed March 2007
Project consisted of replacement of pile caps bent 2 and 3, complete replacement of tie deck spans 1 and 2, installation of new 115-pound welded rail across structure and installation of 10 each 10’ transition ties at each structure end. Work performed by WSOR forces, March 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from the Monroe Subdivision, which includes the communities of Hanover, Orfordville, Brodhead, and Monroe. Total Cost: $11,750 (80% State Grant, 20% WSOR Funded).

Bridge 388 Project, MP 183.26, Reedsburg Subdivision — completed April 2007
Project consisted of replacement of entire tie deck, installation of cast concrete parapet bearing pads, replacement of timber ballast retainers on east and west abutments, and install 8 each #8 X 8' steel dowel rods at east and west abutment parapet (top course to fourth stone course) to unitize backwall. Work performed by Osmose Inc., March/April 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from Rock Springs and Reedsburg, including Union Pacific ballast rock trains. Total Cost: $72,875 (100% WSOR Funded).

Project consisted of replacement and double capping bents 2 and 6, replacement of pile cap bent 4, replacement of all timber stringers, replacement posting of pile 1, bent 1, replacement of sway bracing bent 2 through 5, replacement of entire tie deck, extending west abutment headwall one foot lower, installation of riprap on east and west abutment back and side slopes, installation of new 115-pound welded rail across structure and installation of 10 each 10' transition ties at each structure end. Work performed by Osmose Inc., June/July 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from Monroe. Total Cost: $88,607 (80% State Grant, 20% WSOR Funded).

Bridge F-122 Project, MP 36.95, Monroe Subdivision — completed July 2007
Project consisted of replacement of pile caps bent 2 and 3, component replacement of tie deck entire structure, and excavation of earth overburden covering pile caps bent 1 and 4. Work performed by WSOR forces, July 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from Monroe. Total Cost: $8,455 (100% WSOR Funded).

Bridge B-298 Project, MP 210.63, Prairie Subdivision — completed October 2007
Substructure Repairs Project consisted of replacement of pile caps bent 2, bent 3, bent 4, and bent 6, pile repair by posting, pile 1, bent 1, and pile 4, bent 5, replacement of sway bracing bent 2 and 3, and installation of 65 tons riprap on east backwall and side slopes. Superstructure Upgrades (to enhance switching operations of the New Olsen Grain Facility) Project consisted of installation of double walkway system on north and south sides of structure including: new 20' outrigger ties, timber walkway plank, timber spacer plank, steel walkway posts and wire rope handrail cable. As part of the project, relay 115-lb jointed rail was installed across structure. Work performed by WSOR forces, July 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from Prairie du Chien and also headroom for switching moves at the new Olsens grain loading facility at Boscobel. Total Cost: $31,878 (100% WSOR Funded).

Bridge A-500 Project, MP 86.29, Fox Lake Subdivision — completed December 2007
Project consisted of replacement of deteriorated concrete under bridge bearing shoes, abutment shafts, wingwalls and backwalls in east and west abutment shafts, and complete replacement of timber ballast deck floor and retainer system. As part of the project, new cross ties, 115-lb welded rail and quartzite ballast was installed across structure. Work performed by E-80 Plus Constructors, November/December 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from Chicago, and also local traffic to the Elkhorn Subdivision and the Fox Lake Subdivision beyond Avalon. Total Cost: $150,012 (80% State Grant, 20% WSOR Funded).

Bridge A-502 Project, MP 88.07, Fox Lake Subdivision — completed December 2007
Project consisted of installation of double pile caps bents 1, 2, 3, and 4, and modifying pile cut-off to increase structure profile 3.5", replacement of all original three-ply stringer cords with new four-ply stringer cords, installation of sway bracing on bents 2 and 3, and replacement of entire timber tie deck. Work performed by E-80 Plus Constructors, November/December 2007. This bridge carries all traffic moving to and from Chicago, and also local traffic to the Elkhorn Subdivision and the Fox Lake Subdivision beyond Avalon. Total Cost: $60,506 (80% State Grant, 20% WSOR Funded).
