The U.S. Department of Transportation held a press conference involving U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Chief of Staff Martin Whitmer, WSOR President and CEO William Gardner, and Paul Olsen, Secretary of Olsen Mills in Pickett, WI on Tuesday, October 12, 2004.

As a result of sixteen new companies that have already opened on or near the rail line over the last five years and at least twelve new industries looking to locate along the line, U.S. Department of Transportation Deputy Chief of staff Martin Whitmer wanted to see first hand how WSOR is addressing this growth. Mr. Whitmer's visit included a train ride from Olsen Mills in Oshkosh to a facility in Pickett where there is a major re-development project taking place because of the proximity to the rail line. In addition, Mr. Whitmer learned that all these new industries will be bringing more than 500 new jobs to the region.

The Wisconsin & Southern works cooperatively with state and local governments as well as with industry leaders to attract new business who would benefit by rail service to the state of Wisconsin.

New industries provide considerable economic value to the state of Wisconsin and to the local communities where they are established. Benefits include: additional revenues from state and local property taxes, employment opportunities, locally provided materials and services, public utilities and mutually beneficial partnerships.

WSOR continues to actively attract businesses along the railroad corridor. This is a win-win situation for everyone in the community. For the official press release, please visit the U.S. DOT website. Their address is: http://www.dot.gov/affairs/dot18804.htm.
