| WSOR Partners With Local School District To Promote Safety |
MADISON, WI, May 27, 2009 Governor Jim Doyle proclaimed Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 as “Operation Lifesaver Awareness Day” here in the state of Wisconsin. To commemorate this day, Wisconsin & Southern Railroad and the Middleton-Cross Plains School District joined forces with Wisconsin Chapter of Operation Lifesaver and Madison Gas & Electric to increase awareness of railroad crossing safety to our youth. On this day, Wisconsin & Southern Railroad and Madison Gas & Electric hosted an “Operation Lifesaver Program” for over 400 first graders enrolled in Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District.
The program took place at Madison Gas & Electric’s Freight Office located along WSOR tracks at 133 S. Blair Street, in Madison. Over 400 first graders and their teachers participated in an Operation Lifesaver Program with Mr. James Tracey, State Coordinator of Wisconsin Chapter. The program educates our youth about the dangers that exist near railroad tracks and how everyone can work together to enhance public safety.
To give these children a practical experience on this special day, the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad gave each first grader and their teachers a train ride from Middleton’s Railroad Depot to Madison Gas & Electric’s Freight Office and back. WSOR E9 101 powered the train of three bi-level commuter coaches.
“We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with MG&E, Operation Lifesaver, and the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad to educate our youth on railway safety awareness,” stated Gene Gray of the Middleton-Cross Plains School District. “Each year, the number of fatalities and injuries due to grade crossing incidents or trespassing has been declining and we attribute our public outreach efforts in large part to this decline,” stated James Tracey of Operation Lifesaver.
Operation Lifesaver is a non-profit, international continuing public education program first established in 1972 to end collisions, deaths, and injuries at places where roadways cross train tracks, and on railroad rights-of-way. Operation Lifesaver programs are sponsored cooperatively by federal, state, and local agencies, and the nation’s railroads.
Madison local media also covered the event: NBC15 WKOW-TV.
