| WSOR Receives Grant To Reduce Locomotive Emissions |
MADISON, July 2009 The U.S. EPA has awarded $571,107 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) competitive funds to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to support clean diesel projects, stimulating the state’s economy, creating jobs, and reducing diesel emissions by increasing the energy efficiency of switch locomotives.
In turn, the funds have been directed to Canadian Pacific Railroad and the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad Co. which will use the money to install automatic shutdown/startup equipment on six CP and 34 WSOR locomotives.
With the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, we will continue to build upon the successes of our diesel emission reduction efforts while putting people to work in Wisconsin,” Governor Doyle said. “These recovery funds will boost the economy and reduce fuel consumption by participating rail fleets.”
WSOR has already installed “Smart Start” equipment on about a half dozen of its locomotives in the past two years. The equipment automatically shuts down the locomotive engine when it has idled for a predetermined amount of time while not in use. The engine automatically restarts to keep engine coolant warm in cold weather and also when power is demanded from the locomotive. Doyle says idle reduction devises will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 50-70 percent.
The funds coming to Wisconsin were part of a competitive process through ARRA and were open to state agencies, non-profits and tribal entities.
