| WSOR Hosts GATX TankTrainer At Horicon |
HORICON, October 2009 On October 13th, 14th, and 15th, the Wisconsin & Southern hosted a GATX TankTrainer event. Members of local fire and rescue departments, Federal Railroad Administration representatives, Transportation Security Administration officials, WSOR and GATX Corporation (GATX) customers, WSOR employees and local community officials attended the event. Participants went through a four-hour presentation, where they learned about railroad tank cars. Tank car anatomy, construction, and safe operation of fittings and valves were discussed. A hefty emphasis on safety was present throughout the event. Matthew Koser, Trainmaster for the WSOR stated, “Although incidents involving railroad tank cars are extremely rare, the WSOR wants to make sure that the first responders and customers in our local communities have the most current and valuable information available, should they ever have to respond to a situation.”
Members of the Beaver Dam and Horicon fire departments that were in attendance agree that the GATX TankTrainer was a valuable and informative addition to their training calendar.
The GATX TankTrainer consists of two specially designed railcars; a boxcar and a tank car. The boxcar, although ordinary looking from the outside except for the red color, has been remodeled inside to replicate a turn of the century school house. With tin ceilings, hardwood floors, and oak desks, GATX uses skilled trainers and modern technology to share information with participants. The tank car has also been remodeled into a learning center. Participants are able to view many of the fittings and valves from the bottom and top of the railcar by way of specially designed staircases and walkways. Participants may also enter the inside of the tank car, where they will find a large display of the inner workings of a tank car, and displays of numerous valves and safety appliances that may be present on a variety of tank cars. The TankTrainer cars travel around the country to GATX customers and Railroad partners to provide training on all aspects of loading, unloading and safely handling tank cars.
The WSOR has hosted the GATX TankTrainer event previously in Janesville, WI and hopes to welcome the cars to another WSOR site again in the future.
